Five steps to fund an Ethereum validator

To fund an Ethereum validator, prepare its keys, connect a wallet with ETH on Ethereum mainnet, and submit the deposit through the Staking Launchpad. A validator needs at least 32 ETH to activate. You also need ETH for the transaction fee, called gas.

What do you need before sending a validator deposit?

First, set up and sync an execution client and a consensus client, the two programs that keep your node connected to Ethereum. Then use the Launchpad’s instructions to generate validator keys and choose a withdrawal address. Your withdrawal credentials decide how rewards are handled: regular credentials send rewards above 32 ETH to your address, while compounding credentials keep rewards staked.

Step 1: Check your node, keys and withdrawal address before putting funds at risk. Ethereum recommends trying the setup on its Hoodi test network first. Keep your validator signing keys private and backed up.

Step 2: Make sure the wallet you will use has at least 32 ETH on Ethereum mainnet, plus enough ETH for gas. If your ETH is on another network, move it to mainnet first. The route affects where the funds arrive and what asset you receive; this guide to choosing a quickswap route for cross-chain trades explains how to compare those options.

How do you submit the deposit?

Use the Staking Launchpad to submit the deposit data and pay from your wallet. The Launchpad guides the process and connects the ETH transfer to the validator keys you created.

Step 3: Choose the mainnet option in the Launchpad. Review its checklist and load the deposit data created for your validator. Check that the public key and withdrawal details match your records.

Step 4: Connect your wallet, review the amount and network, then sign the deposit transaction in the wallet. Do not send ETH by hand to a contract address: Ethereum warns that a direct transfer will fail to make you a staker.

  • Confirm the wallet is on Ethereum mainnet.
  • Check the validator public key and withdrawal address.
  • Leave enough ETH for the transaction fee.

Step 5: Check the transaction in your wallet and wait for the deposit to register. Keep the deposit record so you can match it to the validator later.

When does a funded validator start working?

A successful deposit does not mean the validator starts attesting at once. Ethereum may recognize the deposit in about 13 minutes, but the validator then waits in an activation queue. The wait depends on demand, so the exact start time is not known when you send the funds.

Once active, the validator must stay online and attest to the chain. Downtime can bring penalties, and running the node remains your responsibility. The main choice is therefore not only how to send 32 ETH, but whether you can safely manage the keys and keep both clients running.
